D’altra banda, el passat 16 de desembre es va dur a terme la lectura de la tesi doctoral de Victoria Beltrán Martínez, titolada “Contributions to presence-based systems for deploying ubiquitous communication services”, codirigida pel professor del Departament, Josep Paradells Aspas, i pel professor Henning Schulzrinne, de la Columbia University.
Finalment, el passat 19 de desembre, es va celebrar la lectura de la tesi doctoral de l’exprofessor del Departament, Carlos Ramírez Casañas, titolada “Contribuciones a la gestión de los recursos radio en redes móviles celulares de radio paquetes con soporte de calidad de servicio”, codirigida pel professor del Departament, Josep Paradells Aspas i pel professor de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Rafael Pérez Jiménez.
Totes tres tesis doctorals van ser valorades amb la qualificació d’excel·lent cum laude.

A l’edició del mes de setembre el professor Sebastià Sallent és autor de la secció “tribuna”, dedicada a la Internet de les coses. A la secció “des de la portada”, el professor Josep Paradells aporta la seva visió en relació amb les smart cities. Finalment, a la secció “micro obert”, el professor Jesús Alcober opina sobre la necessitat de la mobilitat per a la carrera científica.
A l’edició del mes d’octubre. la secció “cognos” tracta sobre el protocol IPv6. Per a la preparació d’aquesta secció, es va realitzar una entrevista efectuada als professors Anna Calveras, Jordi Casademont, Carles Gómez, Xavier Hesselbach i Rafael Vidal.

ABSTRACT: LUDD is an internal Cisco research project begun in 2008, with the goal of research into new approaches to delivering fault tolerant software for core routers. As core routers (the highest performance routers in the Internet) may not be familiar to some, we begin with an architectural overview of core routers and how they are used in the network. We then describe how software features are currently delivered, and describe the new models of software delivery and services we are exploring. An important point is the impact of these new models on the reliability, availability and maintainability of future core routers. We close with a discussion of example LUDD engagements with universities, researchers, and students in exploring and evaluating the new models.
BIO: Robert Broberg is currently a Distinguished Engineer at Cisco Systems. His career has spanned the networking industry since 1984. Key team contributions include the introduction of Internet capable PCs in 1986 through the electrical/optical shift for Internet traffic. In addition to his work at Cisco, Robert has worked at Bell Laboratories, Ungermann-Bass and AYR in key contributing positions, and through many paradigm shifts in the Internet. Robert's main current research interest is fault tolerant versioning systems as they apply to large scale Internet systems. Some documentation of his recent work is available at r3.cis.upenn.edu.

Multihop wireless networks can be deployed in environments where networking architectures with fixed and wired infrastructure are costly and/or difficult to deploy. Mesh wireless networks are such multihop wireless networks that can be considered as an alternative to access networks. Users, who access to the Internet via mesh wireless networks, expect services and applications like the ones that can be delivered with any other access network, like, for instance, VoIP, audio/video streaming or online gaming applications, in addition to classical applications like web and emails. Due to the limited capacity of the wireless medium that is shared in a multi-hop fashion, the viability of mesh wireless networks requires to integrate quality of service mechanisms, in order to offer applications with good performance, similar to traditional access networks.
Recently, the works on quality of service (QoS) guarantees in a multihop wireless networks have attracted more and more attention. Most of these works assume that the underlying technology used in these networks is the IEEE 802.11 technology. This technology is widely available, not so expensive and provides a distributed radio medium access that can be easily used in a multihop wireless network. On the other hand, the random radio medium access provided by IEEE 802.11 offers few control on the emissions and makes the radio medium
sharing difficult in a multihop context. Therefore, some applications that usually do not require specific guarantees in wired networks, may have so poor performances in multihop wireless networks that QoS can be seen as a solution to make the applications and the network run in such networks.
This course will deal with QoS issues in multihop wireless networks. After a brief description of the principles of IEEE 802.11, we will study the different issues raised by the use of this technology in such networks. Then, different approaches that can be used to solve these issues and ensure quality of service will be presented. The talk will mainly focus on new fair MAC protocols and on available resource estimations for multihop wireless networks. The course will conclude on open challenges in this research area.
